About the American Legion

In March of 1919, members of the American Expeditionary Force came together in Paris for the first American Legion caucus. On September 16, 1919 Congress chartered and incorporated the American Legion. The American Legion is a not-for-profit veteran organization that focuses on our current service-members and our veterans. As the nation's largest wartime veterans service organization, the Legion is also committed to sponsoring beneficial programs as well as mentoring youth in our local communities; some of our sponsored programs include American Legion baseball and Operation Comfort Warriors.

Currently, our membership numbers stand over 2 million strong with over 13,000 chapters established worldwide; this includes all 50 states and the District of Columbia as well as Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Philippines and France-where it all began. In addition to the Legionnaires, the American Legion family is made of the following organizations: Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and the Legion Riders. The success of the American Legion depends entirely on its active membership, participation, and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.
